Well guys, it's been a year since Bruce Willis dove off a building and into our hearts, carrying us into 2014. But the times, they are a'changing. An almost kinda sorta Hoverboard was revealed this year, which means we're close enough. IT'S TIME FOR 2015. But we gotta get there first, and we'll do that with an assortment of time travel movies to see in the new year. We'll begin with George Pal's classic, The Time Machine (1960), starring Rod Taylor as the daring inventor, based on the novel by H. G. Wells and which effectively began the whole time travel genre of sci-fi movies that followed. Next up is the late Chris Marker's avant-garde short film, La Jetée, told in a documentary fashion through still images, about a man being tasked to enlist the past and the future to save the present. This film was the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys (1995), which we shall not be watching on this occasion. After that will be Nicholas Meyer's time travel romp, Time After Time (1979), with Malcolm McDowell's H. G. Wells chasing David Warner's Jack the Ripper through time, from 1893 London to 1979 San Francisco. Finally, we'll see in the new year with Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Part II (1989), arriving in the year 2015 with Doc, Marty, and Jennifer at the stroke of midnight. This is the big one, the one we've been waiting for all our lives. The future is here! Here's the base schedule if you're interested in showing up:
The one thing I have to stress is that this won't be a booze-pounding, raucous affair. It will be a drier, quieter, paradoxier New Years than the other parties out there. So, y'know, we'll be here if you're interested! Past New Years: 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 |
