Issue 7

1 January 2006.
A year ago today I announced that "A Pic A Day" would be shifting to a monthly updating schedule. Well, those were grand intentions promised by someone who had no clue what the subsequent weeks would hold. There were a series of problems, the result of which was my not creating any sort of artwork for nearly eight months.

It finally took an update to Poor, Poor Jeff in October before I felt comfortable with drawing again. This update to "A Pic A Day" will contain what is essentially the entire year 2005.

Phil • 3 January 2005

Phil was over as I did this caricature of him, the same night that he done got drawed all over and dressed up.

Doodles • 4 January 2005

I scribbled these while on the phone with Marie one night. The hands and "blahs" came with the stationary, though I did add eyes to some of them.

Ian Takes a Trip • 23 January 2005

We were over at Ian's house after going out to see "A Very Long Engagement," and everybody wanted to play Cranium except for me, because I'm not terribly privy to games. Ian gave me some paper, and I sat on the couch for like an hour staring at it not having any sort of clue what to draw. Finally, I did this. What I didn't know at the time was that this would be my last drawing until August.

Jeff Drowns in a Huge Pile of Fecal Matter • 7 August 2005

I finally returned to drawing because Jeff and Erin pushed me hard enough. For a lengthy and hearfelt analysis of this picture's story, you should read Series IV of Poor, Poor Jeff. Four other pictures are available there that I'm not reposting here.

Horatio • 23 September 2005

In September a new game of Dungeons and Dragons assembled. I returned as Horatio, my favorite alter-ego. Horatio is a hapless, megalomaniacal pseudo-rogue and former jester who fights with a frying pan. He has a dislike of magic and a distrust of elven creatures. The character of Horatio is one of my very favorite things in life.

I am also especially happy with this drawing!

Dinosaur Pirate • 8 October 2005

One night during D&D there were some velociraptors in the woods we were exploring. I attempted to race Erin to producing a picture of said raptors, me with a pen and paper, her with the Monster Manual. It was a very close finish. The bottom sketch is a dinosaur pirate.

The Lil Hitler Club • 12 November 2005

Katy Murray and I got on a Hitler-themed drawing streak for a little while during a round of D&D. This was my result, along with the second drawing a little below. Katy's drawing was of a cute kitty with a penchant for fascism:

Mechahitler • 12 November 2005

This was the second of the Hitler drawings. You may be plum fascinated to know that this is the second time I've drawn a Mechahitler, the first time being in the "Lipless Wonder" comic, where his body is modeled more on Stalin.

Let's just presume that Hitler is enough of a diva to have a couple of robotic bodies for different purposes.

Tomato Sauce Transfusion • 12 November 2005

This was indeed a busy day, and there's still another drawing from it left! So with this one we were eating pizza and I made some idiot comment about replacing one's blood with tomato sauce. This led to the realization that "Pizza Sauce Transfusion" would make a killer band name.

The Lord Admiral Horatio • 12 November 2005

I picked up some black paper so I could experiment with a silver paint marker I had. It's weird drawing like that. It's almost like thinking backwards because I'm creating light lines on dark rather than the vice versa I'm used to. In any case, this is good ole Horatio after his self-promotion to the rank of Lord Admiral of the Ocean Sea. Yep, he's gotten a ship to call his own, and a crew of scurvy jack tars to manage it. He even has a pair of flags to call his own. He's moving up in the world.

The Approaches of Hoy • 26 November 2005

Again with the D&D! I've sort of become our mapmaker during the campaign. Grandmaster Jeffy has a fondness for naming places Hoy, and this is no exception. Here is the island of Hoy, the capital of the kingdom. The island to the south contains Fort Bain and its surrounding naval base. We've called there many a time, and tend to head there when we've gotten into too much trouble. Horatio now operates a shipyard under his flag in Hoy, working to build a Grande Fleet.

Devin Sucks • 17 December 2005

There was yet another round of D&D, this one before our annual trip to the zoo to see the Lights Before Christmas. Unfortunately, I managed to cut my thumb pretty badly, so both hands were given to either bleeding or providing pressure above my head. Feeling kind of bored, I drew this with my right foot. I didn't even bother taking my sock off. It's Devin. He's not worth that much.

Jeff's Liver Has a Fit • 31 December 2005

I did some Jeff gets hurt drawings because I was feeling pretty out of place at the New Year's party. This probably is not a healthy thing, to draw up into myself and imagine Jeff being mutilated, but it relaxed me a little bit, which I was starting to need. Jeff was enjoying the punch a little too much, if you know what I mean. And I think you do. I realize I totally screwed up what the inside of the human body looks like. I wasn't thinking much about what a liver looks like because there were more pressing matters at hand.

Felicity Kills Jeff • 31 December 2005

Felicity is one of my top favorite people, so sooner or later she'd be bound to make an appearance in these drawings. Personally, I think that if anyone deserves to have a robotic arm of death it would be her. I'm releasing these two drawings early because I don't want to wait until I have a proper sized gallery on the Poor, Poor Jeff site.
